Athrun and Kira's friendship
During the first episode of Gundam SEED, Athrun Zala and Kira Yamato met while in battle and instantly recognized each other. They were both a bit shocked, to say the least, but this is to be expected. This is because, way back then, Athrun and Kira's mothers were close friends. Leonore, Athrun's mother, used to work late often so she entrusted Kira to Calidad, Kira's adoptive mother. Thus, it was evident that both boys would eventually become close, having grown up together. In fact, Kira once described Athrun as somewhat like a brother to him (Gundam SEED Suit CD - Drama 1). They also went to the same school together (Lunar Prep School), where they once made a project that eventually became Torii. It was clear that they both didn't want a war, and Athrun even promised Kira that a war won't happen before they parted ways.
But years later Athrun broke that promise, and in fact became one of the people involved in the war before Kira had been. They were both in-denial at first, not wanting to believe that they were really on opposite sides, demanding why they both were fighting, why Athrun was with ZAFT and why Kira was in the battlefield at all, much less on the side of the Alliance. Athrun, in fact, made several attempts to get Kira on their side, on the ZAFT side where Kira would be with Coordinators like them. But Kira refused to join because of his friends on-board the Archangel. It was clear that their relationship after that incident became one filled with doubt and uncertainty, but Kira still kept Torii, a constant reminder of the fact that he and Athrun were once good friends. I would like to think that maybe in Kira and Athrun's heart, they felt that they still were. But how could they trust each other, now that they were on opposite sides of the war? The time before Nicol Armafi's death was a moment of confusion, both boys believing that, yes, they were still friends, and no, they might not be, and never quite certain which one they believed more.
All this changed when Nicol died by Kira's hands. A close friend of Athrun's, Nicol was the only ZAFT pilot Athrun can talk to. When Nicol died, Athrun was enraged and killed Tolle Koenig in the middle of his murderous fit, which only made Kira furious, as well. Both distraught and mad at the loss of their friends, they tried to fight to the death. Athrun was so enraged, in fact, that he self-detonated Justice just so he could make sure that Kira would die. They were both blinded by anger and revenge, and it seemed that everything they had didn't matter. Their friendship seemed insignificant now, when faced with the violence and hate present in all wars that come and go.[ Continue reading ]
