their story

Kira and Athrun were best friends at the Lunar prep school. Unfortunately, Athrun had to leave for PLANT, and he gave Torii, a mechanical bird he made himself, to Kira as a parting gift, with the hope that someday Kira would follow him to PLANT.

But Kira never moved to PLANT, settling down instead at Heliopolis. They did meet again, however, but that would be years after they separated, and not exactly in the way they were both expecting.

A now sixteen year-old Athrun took part in the raid of Heliopolis, where they were supposedly going to steal the Gundams, the secret weapons being developed by the Earth Alliance Forces. In the heat of the battle, he came face-to-face with Kira, also sixteen years of age, once more. Athrun quickly retreated upon recognizing his best friend.

ZAFT's raid party on Heliopolis successfully stole all but one Gundam, the Strike, that Kira eventually became pilot of, as if in a bitter twist of fate.

Since Athrun piloted the Aegis Gundam for the ZAFT forces and Kira was the pilot of the Strike Gundam for the Earth Alliance, they had no choice but to fight against each other despite the fact that they were old friends. Thus ensues the complicated tale of their relationship...

I fell in love with this pairing the moment I saw the conflict between them. This kind of relationship always intrigued me, from Ramza and Delita of Final Fantasy Tactics to Riou (the hero) and Joei of Suikoden II. Former friends now forced to fight each other because of war... It's always full of angst and struggle: What goes on in the minds of the two friends? Why do they continue to fight each other? If the time comes, can they kill each other? Would they want to?

There is such a thin line between their being best friends and worst enemies. Athrun continuously tried throughout the series to bring Kira to the side of the ZAFT forces, but Kira stubbornly refused to do so because he had to protect his friends on board the Archangel. Images of Athrun or Athrun's words kept on haunting Kira whenever he battled with ZAFT. Kira killed countless of Athrun's comrades, and Athrun did the same. One would wonder how they could still remain friends, but Kira always treasured Athrun's friendship despite everything that happened. Is their bond strong enough to withstand the pain and confusion of war?

The complicated relationship between Athrun and Kira doesn't end in the series: it is continuously explored by the fans of Gundam SEED. Whether friendship or something else, the fandom opens the doors for various and limitless possibilities. :)
