Westbound Train
By LB

A/N: Combination of two 101 Kisses challenges: #55 (Impulse) and #60 (Chains; bonds).

It’s rush hour in Tokyo. The bodies press in around Athrun, people of all ages crowding onto the platform for shelter from the rain. Each person is waiting for the commuter train, bags tight against their sides while they whisper frantically to their neighbour. When will the train get in? It’s five minutes late already!

Luck allows Athrun a glimpse of familiar brown hair: Kira is standing on the edge of the platform, laptop clutched to his chest with one arm. He looks completely serene in the crush of people, bangs hanging limp over his eyes and his dark raincoat still dribbling water from between the folds in the sleeves. Athrun removes his cell phone and flips it open. Within seconds a faint ring can be heard under the murmur of voices, and Kira pulls out his own phone, voice flooding into Athrun’s ear.

“Hello?”

“It’s me.”

Athrun can see the smile spreading across Kira’s face. The other young man cradles the phone, voice softening as he speaks again.

“Where are you?”

“Turn slightly to the left and look a few meters behind.” Kira manages to rotate without bumping anyone, and Athrun raises his arm, waving to catch his attention. “Are you heading home?”

“Mmhm.” Kira waves back. The train pulls in behind him and the crowd surges forward, but he stays rooted to the spot.

“There’s another train in ten minutes heading for Shibuya.” There is only a flicker of hesitation before Kira gives a nod, shifting his hold on the phone.

“Okay. I’ll come home with you tonight.”

Luck has her ways.

A puddle has formed beneath their coats in the closet. Lights are on in the kitchen, half-empty plates left on the table beside cold dishes of rice. Rain pounds against the outer walls of the apartment complex, but it might as well be silent outside for all Athrun and Kira hear.

***

Kira is half asleep. The bed sheets are twisted around their lower bodies and ensnare their feet, holding them prisoner to the mattress. Eyelashes flutter, violet peering out from beneath and warming Athrun’s skin. He curls in on Kira’s body and kisses his shoulder as Kira lets free a drowsy smile.

“Wasn’t this a good idea?”

“It was a very good idea,” agrees Kira, managing to lift a hand so he can toy with Athrun’s dark hair. Damp strands curl around pale fingers and capture Kira’s hand, drawing his knuckles down a rough cheek.

It’s some time later that Kira actually falls asleep, secure within Athrun’s arms.

***

Morning is the key that unfastens the lock holding their bodies together. Athrun warms up the rice in the microwave while Kira showers. Breakfast, however, consists more of play than eating as Athrun finds amusement in attacking Kira’s chopsticks with his own. One last kiss at the doorway and then off to the station. -back into the crush of commuters and chaos.

Athrun is sitting on the westbound train when his phone rings. It’s Kira on the line, thank you for last night and I love you.

I love you too.

Theirs is a bond which cannot be broken.
