my thoughts on Athrun & Kira
It was the first episode of Gundam SEED where Kira and Athrun first caught my attention. For some reason relationships where both parties are childhood friends always touched me; maybe it's because their bond was formed at a very early stage in life, when they are only maturing and they are very dependent on the people around them. Also, it's a stage where people still don't care about trivial things such as wealth, popularity, or social status to make friends. Their friendship was simple: they were friends because they wanted to.I also loved the Sakura Blossom scene, where Athrun gave Torii (Birdy) to Kira, and it's my favorite of all. It has a lot of sentimentality to it, and yeah, I'm a sucker for stuff like that. :P I grew teary-eyed when I read that part in Suit CD one, especially when Athrun said "For you... It can shake its head, sing, sit on your shoulder... and even fly!" For Athrun to make something extremely challenging, to the point that he even told Kira once of the impossibility of making a mechanical bird that could fly, and then constructing one anyway for his best friend, moved me a lot. It's not often to see people do that, to be bothered with something seemingly trivial, and yet Athrun did it for Kira. I admired the strength of their friendship, their almost brotherly bond.
Everything about their relationship I found very melancholy, touching, and extremely admirable. I felt that sense of high regard for their friendship especially when Kira and Athrun reunited and forgave each other, even if they didn't say it directly. That, for me, is a sign of true, unconditional friendship; when you forgive a person for things seemingly unforgivable.I respect logic and linear reasoning, but I also am aware that sometimes things cannot be explained by logic. I believe that the most important things in life go beyond reason, beyond everything that can be explained. Some things just are; they are without words, without explanation, such as the love you feel for others, romantically or otherwise. So maybe some people think that Athrun and Kira becoming friends again after all the pain they caused each other was beyond reason, and maybe it is. Maybe that's how strong their friendship is.
Of course, I enjoy the idea of them being more than "just friends", but that doesn't mean I'm against the thought of them not being involved in a romantic relationship. After all, their platonic relationship is what made me love them in the first place, and made me cry and laugh and smile, and feel extremely happy to see them together again after all they've been through. For me, whether friendship, brotherly, or romantic, it's the strength of their relationship that is most important, the strength to withstand anyone and anything that comes along their way and remain unscathed. :)
